It’s Nikon’s microscopic world, and we’re just living in it! For 51 years, the Nikon Small World Photomicrography Competition has been regarded as the leading forum for showcasing the beauty and complexity of life as seen through the light microscope. Open to anyone with an interest in microscopy and photography, the competition has recognized scientific technique and artistry from around the globe. One of our longest-term clients, Nikon Instruments shares these hidden marvels with the general public to educate and inspire them.
To ensure optimal awareness and representation of this year’s competition, we implemented a multi-pronged media relations strategy. Through extensive research, relationship building and content development, our team effectively targeted journalists in print, television, radio and social media with an interest in art and science from around the globe. These efforts increased digital engagement with the Nikon Small World website and social channels while revealing the hidden worlds that only a microscope can capture.

Every year, Hot Paper Lantern elevates Nikon’s Small World and Small World in Motion competitions through a strategy that blends media relations, social media, and storytelling, ultimately securing hundreds of media hits and billions of impressions, helping the competitions gain traction far beyond the scientific community.
By combining deep media expertise with a strong sense of storytelling, Hot Paper Lantern helps Nikon reveal the beauty of science to a global audience, and ensures the conversation continues long after the winners are announced.
